Web 2.0 and SEO

Web 2.0 has been a buzz word now for several years and it continues to be a fad. Even in SEO, people talk about the use of Web 2.0. But frankly, I don’t see such a big deal about it or why I should be all excited.

You see, SEO is all about links as far as off-page factors go. So does it really make a difference where those links from, as long as they are quality links? The only thing is really the quality that matters, search engines could care less if it’s 2.0 or 1.0.

The Bumpy Ride of SEO

Climbing up the rankings in search engines (especially Google) is a very bumpy ride. And sometimes it can be frustrating if you don’t know what to expect. You would think that once you get a good ranking in the SERP you should retain it or the fluctuation should be minimal. If you see your site falling down it’s easy to panic.

Backlink Quality vs Quantity

Anytime you build links there’s a question you have to answer – quality or quantity? You can get tons of links by using all kind of automation, submitters, networks and so on. But do those links give any benefit at all?

You have probably seen many times people posting on forums low quality posts just to get their signature out there. The reasoning behind that is that every post creates a backlink from those forums. Using Javascript and Flash Widgets

If you’re gonna use fancy Javascript or Flash menus or other widgets there’s an important SEO aspect to keep in mind. Search engines aren’t able to see Javascript nor Flash (for the most part) so any content or links will be invisible to them. If you’re gonna use them, here are some guidelines to follow:

The Importance of Valid HTML

You may sometimes hear that valid HTML is a must for SEO. The matter of fact is that it’s not essential and will not likely to influence your rankings, but it’s a good idea to keep your website error-free if possible. By maintaining a valid code you make it easier for search engines to crawl your site, and avoid any errors.

Why Content is Key in SEO

More often than not when you read article on SEO, you see tips on how to get links, how to optimize the pages and so on. But rarely does anyone emphasize the importance of great content.

See, SEO is all about beating your first page competition. To outrank someone you must simply do everything better. And that includes content. You should always start with assessing your competition and finding a way to make a better site. That will not automatically make you rank higher (unless the competition is little and your site has a big authority), but it will pay off in the long run.
