Why You Should Not Go for Big Keywords

Probably every marketer dreams about ranking on top for big keywords. But let me tell you, it’s way over-hyped.

First of all, there’s a lot less traffic than the keyword tools show. Actually, on average there’s about 5 times less traffic from any big keyword than Google keyword tool indicates. So ranking high doesn’t mean you will get all the traffic in the world.

Secondly, the traffic is less targeted than longer tail keywords. That means lower conversion rates. So given that there is a lot less traffic than you expect, your sales may not increase all that much.

And finally, they take a lot of resources to rank for. And after spending all those resources and time you end up with only slight increase in traffic and even slighter increase of sales.

It doesn’t pay off! You can spend the same resources to rank for a lot mid range keywords that are a lot more targeted and often receive similar traffic. And if you want a lot more traffic, consider other marketing techniques than SEO, such as guest posting or banner ads.

The bottom line is, don’t get hung up on big keywords thinking they’re the holy grail. It might be a good sport to beat super high competition but at the end of the day you want more sales, not rankings or traffic.
